Halves Help › Play a seated game

Play a seated game

Stand the phone up like a laptop. The raised half holds a secret. The flat half is the table you share.

How seated mode works

In seated mode, the top half of iPhone Duo stands up and the bottom half lies flat. The raised half shows the secret: a word, a key card or a target. Only the player in front of it can see it.

The flat half is shared. It holds the drawing paper, the word grid or the dial, so both players can see it.

The secret stays on top Halves draws the secret only on the raised half. It is never mirrored on the flat half.

Start a seated game

  1. Open Halves and pick Draw & Guess, Word Spy or The Dial. Seated games are marked “stand up” on the shelf.
  2. Tap Play.
  3. Stand the phone up like a laptop. Halves reads the hinge and the game starts by itself.
  4. Play your part. When it’s time to swap roles, close the phone and pass it on.

If you lay the phone flat during a seated game, the game pauses until you stand it up again.

The three seated games

Draw & Guess

The drawer sees the word on the raised half and draws it on the flat half. The guesser watches the drawing and calls out answers. Turns last 60 seconds, with two skips. A match is five rounds. At the end, you can save the doodles to Photos.

Word Spy

The spymaster’s key card sits on the raised half. The shared grid of 25 words lies on the flat half. The spymaster gives a clue and a number, and the other player guesses. You play two rounds, one as each spymaster. The higher score wins.

The Dial

The psychic sees a hidden target on the raised half. The guesser uses the shared dial on the flat half. The closer the guess, the more points: 4, 3 or 2. Roles swap every round, over eight rounds.

The pass

Close the phone to hand over the turn. Closing it clears the secret from the raised half. The outside screen shows who goes next and says “Open to see your word.”

Hand the phone over. The next player opens it, stands it up and sees their own secret. Close, pass, open.

Which iPhone you need

The three seated games need an iPhone Duo, because the secret is shown only on the raised half. On an iPhone that doesn’t fold, their cards say “Needs an iPhone Duo” and they don’t start.

The eight flat games play on any iPhone and on iPad: Air Hockey, Reaction Duel, Dots & Boxes, Reversi, Backgammon, Checkers, Mancala and Pairs. See Seated games on an iPhone that doesn’t fold.
